5th World Water Forum (Istanbul 16-23 March, 2009): side events documents

At the 5th World Water Forum the four members of the Water Observatory did present their research and lead two additional side events on the Water Footprint and the Silent Revolution of Intensive Groundwater Use.  



Side-event about WATER ETHICS

 

Summary: Presentation of the FMB book "Water And Ethics"

The Botin Foundation Water Observatory, together with UNESCO-IAH, hosted a side event on 20th March. The side event presented a FMB book published by Taylor and Francis on Water Ethics (Edited by M R Llamas, Luis Martinez Cortina and Aditi Mukherji). 

The side event was convened by Professor Ramon Llamas (FMB and Spanish Royal Academy of Sciences). The side event consisted of a series of presentations from the authors of the chapters in this book, and which included: Alice Aureli (UNESCO--IAH); Janos Bogardi ( UN University); W. Cosgrove (Content Coordinator WWDR3); Magdy Hefni  (Ambassador, Egypt); Luis Veiga da Cunha (Universidade Nova de Lisboa,); Donal O´Leary (Transparency International); Dipak Gyawali (Former Minister Water Resources, Nepal); Jack Moss  (Aqua Fed); K. Villholth (GEUS); Aditi Mukherji (IWMI, Sri Lanka).

Side-event on the WATER FOOTPRINT

  

Summary: Water Footprint and Virtual Water Trade: Do These Concepts Promote Sustainable Use of Water Globally?

 

The FM Botin Water Observatory, together with the Technical University of Madrid (UPM, Spain) and the University of Twente, hosted a side event on 18thth March. The side event focused on The Water Footprint and Virtual Water trade: do these concepts promote the sustainable use of water globally? 

  

The side event was convened by Dr Alberto Garrido (alberto.garrido@upm.es) (UPM) and Dr Maite Martinez Aldaya (Univ. Twente) (m. The side event consisted of a series of presentations by experts, followed by a panel discussion. The presentations will be made available at the CEIGRAM (UPM) website. Experts presenting were: M. The London School of Economics, together with the collaboration of IUCN (Katherine Cross) and the Botin Foundation Water Observatory hosted a side event on 20th March. The side event focused on THE ROLE OF THE GROUNDWATER SILENT REVOLUTION: “MORE CASH AND NATURE PER DROP: Re-thinking global water scarcity and security".

 

The side event was convened by Dr Elena Lopez-Gunn (E.lopez-gunn@lse.ac.uk) (Alcoa Research Fellow, LSE and Senior Research Fellow, Botin Foundation); Katherine Cross (IUCN) and Professor Ramon Llamas (FMB and Spanish Royal Academy of Sciences). The side event consisted of a series of presentations by experts on groundwater management, followed by a panel discussion.
